Waldorf School
Just across the Costa Rica Tree House you'll find the Waldorf School.
It's a small Waldorf school situated in playa Chiquita, Little Beach, on the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, 5 kilometers south of Puerto Viejo Talamanca in the Province of Limon. The school was founded five years ago by a group of concerned citizens looking for an alternative to traditional schooling.
History of Waldorf Education
Founded in 1919 when the Austrian philosopher and educator Rudolf Steiner was asked to develop a curriculum for the children of the workers at the Waldorf Astoria cigar factory near Stuttgart, Germany.
Since then more than 700 schools have been established worldwide. Waldorf schools have become the largest independent, non-denominational education movement in the world.
Principles of Waldorf Education
The vision of the first Waldorf school was to educate the children in such a way as to prevent future catastrophes similar to World War I. The goal would be to educate the whole child so that thinking, feeling, and doing become integrated.
The curriculum is based on the development of the child and the way the child learns at a particular stage, e.g.
The preschool child learns through imitation. The kindergarden provides a daily rhythm of play, songs, and rhymes as well as cooking, baking, and artistic activities.
The elementary school child learns through imagination. When what is presented to child speaks to the imagination and is truly felt, it is remembered and learned.
When you make a tour reservation or arrangements thru the Tree House Lodge, you are contributing with the Green Iguana Foundation, dedicated to the preservation of the Green Iguana, an specie in danger of extinction.
