Puerto Viejo Town
Puerto Viejo area is home to at least three different cultures: the English- speaking black farmers who grew cacao and coconut until a blight in the early 1980s ruined the cacao harvest, the indigenous people of Bri bri and Caber tribes who live in the foothills, and the Spanish-speaking immigrants.
Over the last 15 years many foreigners also found a home in this multi cultural neighborhood.

if you want a taste of culture in the kitchen, try "rice and beans" cooked with coconut or jerk chicken, at the popular inexpensive Sodas. Also the famous "rundown", a soup made from whatever the cook can run down, usually seafood with nampi and cassava or other rooted vegetables.
When you make tour reservations or arrangements thru the Tree House Lodge, you contribute with the Green Iguana Foundation, dedicated to the preservation of the Green Iguana, an specie in danger of extinction. And you get a free Iguana Conservation Tour, given every week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Click here to learn more about this program >
